  • Description

VOTES ARE STILL BEING COUNTED IN GUYANA'S FIRST NATIONAL ELECTION SINCE IT RECEIVED INDEPENDENCE FROM BRITAIN TWO YEARS AGO. THE PEOPLE'S NATIONAL CONGRESS PARTY, LED BY PRIME MINISTER FORBES BURNHAM, MAINTAINS A NARROW LEAD BUT THE FINAL OUTCOME PROBABLY WILL NOT BE KNOWN UNTIL NEXT THURSDAY WHEN OVERSEAS VOTES HAVE BEEN COUNTED.

POLLING WAS CONDUCTED YESTERDAY (MONDAY) IN BRIGHT SUNSHINE AND IN A RELATIVELY TROUBLEFREE ATMOSPHERE. BUT THERE HAD BEEN CHARGES OF ELECTION RIGGING FROM THE MAIN OPPOSITION LEADER, DR. CHEDDI JAGAN, WHO HEADS THE PEOPLE'S PROGRESSIVE PARTY. DR. JAGAN, IS A MARXIST AND AN EAST INDIAN. MR. BURNHAM IS A NEGRO AND POLITICAL OBSERVERS SAY THAT THE ELECTION WILL BE DECIDED UPON RACE AND NOT IDEOLOGY. IN THE PAST, THERE HAS BEEN MUCH VIOLENCE IN GUYANA WITH CLASHES BETWEEN NEGROES AND EAST INDIANS. THE LATEST FIGURES GIVE THE PEOPLE'S NATIONAL CONGRESS PARTY A LEAD OF SOME 10-THOUSAND VOTES WITH COUNTING COMPLETE IN 23 OF THE 39 ELECTORAL DISTRICTS.
