The Venezuelan government has honoured a pledge to help Nicaragua in its reconstruction programme with its first shipment of desperately needed medicines, food and clothing. A hercules plane loaded with supplies flew from Caracas to Managua on Sunday (29 July).
SYNOPSIS: Venezuela is one of the countries Nicaragua is depending on to help with the grave shortage of food and medicines.
Government Ministers Dr. Dr. Hilarion Cardozo and Dr Zambano Velazco travelled with the cargo and are to hold consultations with government officials in Nicaragua abut future Venezuelan aid.
Venezuela was one of the five Andean Pact nations to formally recognise the now victorious Sandanistas as a legitimate forces in the struggle against Anastasio Somoza.
Venezuela was also among the first countries to recognise the new Nicaraguan leadership and pledge to help in the reconstruction of the country. Aid currently being shipped to Nicaragua will go to five hundred thousand people reported to be facing starvation. The heaviest fighting between the Nicaraguan National Guard and the Sandanistas took place at planting time and Nicaraguans are just now attempting to cultivate crops that should have been ready for harvest by now.
