  • Description

BRITISH MOTORCYCLIST DEREK MINTER SCORED HIS FIRST TT VICTORY WITH A SCORCHING WIN IN THE INTERNATIONAL LIGHTWEIGHT 250 c.c. TOURIST TROPHY AT THE ISLE OF MAN, ON JUNE 4TH. RIDING A JAPANESE HONDA (No. 1), HE COMPLETED THE SIX LAPS, A DISTANCE OF 226.4 MILES, AT AN AVERAGE SPEED OF 96.68 M.P.H.

HONDA MACHINES ALSO FILLED THE PLACINGS. SECOND WAS JIM REDMAN OF SOUTHERN RHODESIA (No.10) AT 95.40 M.P.H., AND THIRD TIM PHILLIS OF AUSTRALIA (No. 4), AT 92.87 M.P.H.

THE RACE GOT OFF TO A ROARING START WHEN BOB McINTYRE DID THE FIRST LAP AT 99.06 M.P.H., BUT HIS MACHINE BROKE DOWN SHORTLY AFTER. FOR THE NEXT THREE LAPS MINTER AND REDMAN SWOPPED PLACES. HOWEVER THE RHODESIAN, HAMPERED BY A PETROL CAP WHICH WORKED LOOSE WHENEVER HE BRAKED, WAS FORCED TO LOSE TIME FOR REFUELLING STOPS. PHILLIPS, TOO, WAS HAMPERED BY BAD LUCK, STARTING THE RACE WITH THE WRONG JETS IN HIS CARBURETTOR. HE FOUGHT BACK TO TAKE FOURTH POSITION ON THE THIRD LAP AND THEN SLIPPED PAST M. HAILWOOD (No. 2) INTO THIRD PLACE.

MEANWHILE, MINTER AND REDMAN WERE STILL FIGHTING A CLOSE DUEL, CHANGING PLACES FIVE TIMES UNTIL THE FIFTH LAP WHEN THE BRITISH RIDER GAINED 17 SECONDS. ANOTHER PIT STOP IN THE FINAL LAP SEALED REDMAN'S CHANCES AND MINTER ROARED OVER THE LINE FIRST.
