INTRODUCTION: Former Deputy Prime Minister of India Mr. Morarji Desai, the 80-year-old leader of the main opposition to Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi, said on Tuesday (15 February) that people were afraid of her. Mr. Desai was talking in Delhi to the BBC's Charles Wheeler, and also spoke about the ideology of his Janata People's Party, which is bitterly critical of Mrs. Gandhi's performance. The party has promised a return to the social and economic values of Mahatma Gandhi if it is given a mandate at next month's general election.

SYNOPSIS: The Janata Party which includes the opposition faction of the ruling Congress Party, is allied with the breakaway Congress for Democracy group of former Agriculture Minister Jagjiwan Ram.

Mr. Desai, who was imprisoned under the state of emergency introduced by Mrs. Gandhi, then talked about dictatorship.
