  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Major Pedro Pires, Prime Minister of Portugal's former Cape Verde Islands, has been in Lisbon for a three-day official visit.

SYNOPSIS: He was received at the capital's airport by the Portuguese Prime Minister, Dr. Mario Soares, and other government officials. A small bomb exploded about 100 yards (90 metres) away from Major Pires as he reviewed a guard of honour. Police said it caused no injuries or damage. The conservative Lisbon's newspaper "O Dia" said the bomb was planted by Cape Verdian dissidents.

Agreements on cultural, consulate and telecommunications cooperation were expected to be signed during the visit. Talks between the two Prime Minister were to cover a wide range of other co-operations projects, including agriculture, fisheries, health and education. Relations with the islands, situated off the West Africa's coast, are the best that Portugal has with any of its former colonies, according to official sources in Lisbon.

Major Pires, a member of the left-wing liberation movement, became Prime Minister in July 1975 when the islands gained independence.
