  • Description

In Italy, thousand of people celebrated May Day, the international workers' holiday, with enthusiastic but peaceful marches through city streets.

Compared with the celebrations in other socialist and communist -countries, however, the crowds were small.

Only about ten thousand people attended a communist trade union rally and march through Rome's streets, while across the city Pope Paul attracted twenty thousand to an open-air mass.

But the Pope himself drew attention to the May Day celebration, which fell on the same day as the Church's celebration of St. Joseph the Worker.

In Rome and Milan, workers welcomed the South Vietnamese to their ranks.
