    FIVE-HUNDRED TONS OF LIMESTONE HAVE BEEN POURED DOWN THE AIRSHAFTS OF THE WEST VIRGINIAN DISASTER MINE TODAY (SATURDAY). IT IS HOPED THE LIMESTONE WILL HALT THE STRING OF NEW BLASTS WHICH HAVE BLOWN OFF STEEL AND CONCRETE SEALS, USED TO CUT OFF THE AIRFLOW TO THE FIRES IN THE 600-FEET (182 METRE) DEEP MINE NEAR FARMINGTON.

    THE CONCRETE COVERS WERE BLOWN UP TO 400-FEET IN THE AIR BY THE LATEST EXPLOSIONS AND SMOKE POURING FROM NEW MINE SHAFTS INDICATES THAT THE FIRES ARE STILL SPREADING.

    THE RESCUE TEAMS, WHO HAVE BEEN WAITING TO TRY TO REACH THE 78 MEN WHO WERE TRAPPED UNDERGROUND WHEN THE FIRE STARTED ON WEDNESDAY, CANNOT EVEN GET NEAR TO THE ENTRANCES TO THE MINE. BUT RELATIVES AND FRIENDS OF THE TRAPPED MEN STILL WAIT AT THE NEARBY COMPANY STORE FOR NEWS.

    AN OFFICIAL OF THE MINEWORKERS UNION - MR. LEWIS EVANS - SPOKE TO THE RELATIVES AND TO MINERS FROM THE OTHER SHIFTS YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) DENYING RUMOURS THAT SAFETY MEASURES AT THE MINE AND HAD BEEN FAULTY FOR SOME TIME.
