  • Description

ROY EMERSON, LAST YEAR'S WIMBLEDON CHAMPION, WON HIS WAY THROUGH TO THE FINAL AGAIN TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WHEN HE BEAT AMERICA'S LEADING PLAYER, DENNIS RALSTON IN THE SEMI-FINAL.

EMERSON POWERED HIS WAY TO A 6-1, 6-2, 7-9, 6-1 VICTORY OVER THE 22-YEAR OLD CALIFORNIAN.

RALSTON, PLAGUED BY DOUBLE FAULTS -- HE MADE 14 SUCH ERRORS IN THE MATCH -- PROVIDED SOME THRILLING TENNIS WHEN HE SAVED FIVE MATCH POINTS AND WON THE THIRD SET AFTER ALMOST BEING SWEPT OFF THE CENTRE COURT IN THE FIRST TWO SETS.

THE MATCH LASTED FOR AN HOUR AND 49 MINUTES. THE FIRST SET TOOK THE WIRY AUSTRALIAN ONLY 16 MINUTES TO WIN, AND THE SECOND, JUST FOUR MINUTES LONGER.BUT IT WAS THE THIRD SET THAT BROUGHT THE CHEERS FROM THE HUGE CROWD, AS RALSTON FOUGHT BACK FROM WHAT SEEMED AN IMPOSSIBLE POSITION.

BUT A SUCCESSION OF DOUBLE-FAULTS IN THE LAST SET PUT THE AMERICAN OUT OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. NOW EMERSON MEETS STOLLE IN THE FINAL FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN SUCCESSION.
