Sweden's Hakan Carlqvist won the 250cc World Motocross Championships on Sunday (29 July), when he finished third behind American, Bob Hannah, in the second heat of the American leg of the Grand Prix Championships at New York State's Unadilla track. The rest of honours went to another local rider, Kent Howerton, whose two second places gave him overall victory in the Grand Prix event.

SYNOPSIS: Motocross, or Scrambling, started in Europe in the late 1920s, but its popularity has now spread to the other side of the Atlantic.

In the first race, America's Marty Tripes was soon in the lead, followed by the Soviet Union's Vladimir Kavinov who is in third place in the overall World Championship.

Bob Hannah was one of the many young Americans trying to prevent Tripes winning his second successive Grand Prix on the one-point-one mile (one-point-eight kilometre) Unadilla circuit. Fellow countryman, Kent Howerton, was also pressing hard.

But Tripes set a blistering pace and took the chequered flag to win the first race, followed by the Howerton and Hannah, to make it a one-two-three for the United States.

Most of the leaders in the overall World Championship did badly in the first race, but the second gave them another chance to score some badly-needed points.

Home rider, Bob Hannah, was again doing well, and was soon on the tail of Sweden's Hakan Carlqvist, who only had to finish in the first four to win the World Championship Carlqvist was taking things easy to be sure of finishing, and the race developed into a duel between the in-form Americans, Howerton and Hannah.

Hannah is one of the most promising of America's young Motocross riders. He managed to pass Howerton and Held on for a memorable victory. But the day belonged to Sweden's Carlqvist who took third place. Although there are still two rounds to go he has clinched this year's 250cc World Championship.
