  • Description

TROUBLE IN CYPRUS.IN THE PAST 48 HOURS CLASHES BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURKISH, POPULATION OF CYPRUS HAVE LED TO SEVERAL SHOOTING INCIDENTS.TWO TURKS, ONE A WOMAN, HAVE BEEN KILLED AND ANOTHER THREE SERIOUSLY INJURED.

IN AN EFFORT TO AVERT FURTHER CLASHES PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AND THE VICE-PRESIDENT, DR.KUTCHUK, WENT OUT TOGETHER AND VISITED SEVERAL VILLAGES WITH MIXED COMMUNITIES YESTERDAY.THEY URGED THE PEOPLE TO LIVE PEACEFULLY TOGETHER.

THE FIRST SHOOTING INCIDENT TOOK PLACE EARLY YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) MORNING.A POLICE STATEMENT SAID A POLICE PATROL STOPPED A GROUP OF PEOPLE IN NICOSIA.ASKED THEM FOR THEIR IDENTITY CARDS, AND STARTED SEARCHING THEM.A CROWD OF TURKS GATHERED AND SOMEONE IN THE CROWD FIRED AN AUTOMATIC WEAPON, POLICE RETURNED THE FIRE.WHEN THE CROWD HAD DISPERSED A TURK WAS FOUND DEAD AND A TURKISH WOMAN, INJURED BY SHOTS, DIED ON THE WAY TO HOSPITAL.

SHORTLY AFTERWARDS ALL RANKS OF POLICE WERE ISSUED WITH GUNS, AND CORDONS SET UP AROUND NICOSIA TO PREVENT ARMS REACHING THE CITY FROM OUTSIDE SOURCES.SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF SHOOTING WERE REPORTED THROUGH THE DAY BUT NONE APPEARED TO BE SERIOUS.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE TURKISH COMMUNITY ACCUSED THE GREEKS OF TRYING TO PROVOKE THE TURKS.HE ADDED: "WE MUST PRESERVE OUR COOLNESS.AS LONG AS WE STAY WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF LAW AND ORDER THE GREEKS WILL BE UNABLE TO REACH THEIR GOAL OF TRAMPLING UPON THE PRESENT ORDER."
YESTERDAY'S CLASHES ARE BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN TRIGGERED BY PUBLICATION OF PRESIDENT MAKARIOS'S PROPOSAL TO AMEND THE CYPRUS CONSTITUTION WHICH GUARANTEES TURKISH CYPRIOTS CERTAIN RIGHTS IN THE LEGISLATURE AND PUBLIC SERVICE.THE PROPOSALS WOULD "STREAMLINE" THE CONSTITUTION.AT PRESENT ANY CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES REQUIRE A TWO-THIRDS PARLIAMENTARY MAJORITY; AND BASIC CHANGES WOULD INVOLVE INTERNATIONAL TREATIES.

SOME OBSERVERS SAY TENSION BETWEEN THE TWO COMMUNITIES HAS BEEN BUILDING UP FOR SOME TIME AND CITE THE BOMBING OF A STATUE OF A GREEK CYPRIOT, MARKOS DRAKOS, EARLIER THIS MONTH (DEC 4TH).
