Background: An Orange Free State racing driver marked his retirement from the sport in a novel way on January 22. Travelling at 140 kilometres per hour (87 mph) his car flew over ten vehicles to establish a new South African car-jumping record. Driver Don Terblanche cleared 44.7 metres (136 feet) before his car crashed into the ground in a shower of debris. Surprisingly, he survived without serious injury and suffered only some broken ribs. A large crowd gathered to watch Terblanche perform his feat. His car-jumping record marked the end of a notable career as a racing driver and helped to raise money for an athletics club in Orange Free State.
