    Background: HERCULANEUM, ITALY

Archaeologists working in the ruins of Herculaneum, nestling today amid a modern part of suburban Naples, have found perfectly preserved human and animal skeletons, protected from the elements in the wall of mud and lava that engulfed them almost 2,000 years ago when Mount Vesuvius erupted. The 16 human skeletons are those of ordinary townspeople. The first 12 lay under an arch which collapsed when lava, ash and mud from the volcano engulfed the area in 79 A.D. They include five adults and seven children or adolescents who fell as they tried to reach the boats that took most of the town's population to safety. Four other human skeletons, and the remains of a horse, have been found nearby. The discovery has excited archaeologists who believe that the Herculaneum remains will become as famous as a tourist attraction, as the nearby historic site at Pompeii. The Herculaneum diggings were visited this month by Italy's Minister for Culture. Vincenzo Scotti.
