Background: Louis Lourmais, 40-year old French ex-Commando, waded ashore at Strasbourg, France Marll for an overnight stop before setting out on the next leg of his 600-mile swimming marathon up the Rhine from Shaffhausen, Switzerland, to Rotterdam, Holland.
During the three days since he entered the icy waters at Shaffhausen Mar 8, Lourmais--attempting to prove that shipwreck victims can survive in the iciest waters if they wear special equipment-has progressed at the rate of 44 miles a day.
Enroute from Basle, Switzerland, to Strasbourg, Lourmais was accompanied by his wife, also an accomplished underwater swimmer. Together they swam through the fast flowing waters, passing tugs and river boats. It was dark when they arrived at Strasbourg, and, although very tired, they found enough spirit to smile for assembled cameramen.
Lourmais says that unless he falls victim to Influenza, he will reach Rotterdam on Mar 25.
