THE FIRST PLANE ON THE NEW ROUTE, A GIANT SOCIET TU-114, TOOK OFF FROM MOSCOW'S SHEREMETYEVO AIRPORT CARRYING A HIGH LEVEL DELEGATION OF SOVIET OFFICIALS TO JAPAN.

    FLYING TIME ON THE 8,000 KILOMETRE (5,000 MILE) ROUTE IS 10 HOURS 25 MINUTES TO TOKYO FROM MOSCOW AND 11 HOURS 25 MINUTES ON THE RETURN FLIGHT.

    THE NEW SERVICE IS OPERATED BY JAPAN AIRLINES AND THE SOVIET UNION'S STATE-RUN AEROFLOT, BUT OTHER MAJOR AIRLINES HOPE TO GET PERMISSION TO FLY OVER SIDERIA SOON IN AN EFFORT TO TRIM HOURS OFF EXISTING ROUTES TO JAPAN.

    INITIALLY, AEROFLOT IS PROVIDING BOTH PILOTS AND PLANES BECAUSE SIDERIA AS AT PRESENT BANNED TO FOREIGN PILOTS. JAPAN AIRLINES HOPE TO USE THEIR OWN AND CREW IN ABOUT TWO YEARS.
