    In the first leg of a Libertadores Cup semi-final, Nacional of Uruguay drew 1-1 against Independiente of Argentina at the Montevideo stadium of May 31. Nacional gained an early lead after eleven minutes when Juan Ramon Carrasco scored. Carrasco narrowly missed another goal in the second half when his free kick deflected off another player. Carlos Aguilera and Jorge Villalan had chances to make it 2-0 for Nacional, but the Independiente goalkeeper, Carlos Goyen was in impressive form. Independiente equalised nineteen minutes into the second half when Alejandro Barberon scored from a rebound off the post. The result gave Independiente an important away draw. The teams meet again on July 4 in Argentina.
