  • Description

Bolivian President Hernan Siles Zuazo agreed today to remain in office, reversing an earlier decision that he would resign to end an internal political crisis. The President's change of mind was announced to a public demonstration in front of the Presidential palace. Earlier six of Bolivia's leading labour unions had gone on strike in support of Zuazo, saying their members would not return to work if he resigned. Representatives of the armed forces reaffirmed their support. Opposition to the President came from the left wing of the ruling National Revolutionary movement, headed by Juan Lechin and former President Victor Paz Estenssoro who is now Ambassador to Britain.
