    THE INDIAN PRIME MINISTER, MRS. INDIRA GHANDI, STARTED A 34-HOUR CAMPAIGN IN WEST BENGAL YESTERDAY IN PREPARATION FOR FEBRUARY'S MID-TERM ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS IN THE STATE. DURING HER TOUR OF THE STATE, MRS. GHANDI APPEALED TO THE PEOPLE TO COLLABORATE WITH THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IN AVOIDING THE DANGER OF AN EXTERNAL THREAT.

    THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF INCIDENTS AT ELECTION MEETINGS IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE STATE DURING THE PAST TWO WEEKS, AND THE WEST BENGAL GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN ENDEAVOURING TO MAINTAIN PEACE AT MEETINGS ATTENDED BY THE PRIME MINISTER.

    DURING HER TOUR, MRS, GHANDI HAS STRESSED THAT INDIA IS ANXIOUS TO SEE HOW RELATIONS COULD BE IMPROVED WITH PAKISTAN AND CHINA, BUT SHE HAS WARNED THAT ANY IMPROVEMENT WOULD NOT BE AT THE COST OF INDIA'S NATIONAL DIGNITY AND INTEREST.

    MRS. GHANDI IS CAMPAIGNING FOR THE RULING CONGRESS PARTY.
