The Ceylonese Prime Minister, Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, and her Cabinet ministers got together at the weekend for some hard work - not to discuss the affairs of state but to shovel earth and lay bricks.
They were attending the inauguration in Colombo of a conference hall being built by the People's Republic of China. Chinese architects and engineers joined the Ceylonese leaders as volunteers building labourers.
Mrs. Bandaranaike hoped that the example set by her ministers and herself would encourage people to give free labour for the project in a bid to cut costs. Opposition members of Parliament and public servants have already volunteered their services.
The hall, costing nearly two million pounds Sterling (5 million dollars) will be a memorial to Mrs. Bandaranaike's husband, Mr. Solomon Bandaranaike, who as Prime Minister was assassinated in 1959.
