  • Description

British Prime Minister, Mr. Harold Wilson, returned to his home in London on Friday (VI October) as reports indicated that his Labour Party would be returned to power with a narrow overall majority of three seats in Parliament (Lower House).

Mr. Wilson spent election night (10 October) at his own constituency of Huyton, near Liverpool.

The next morning he flew to London and returned to his home at Lord North Street. He has lived there over the last few months and has used the Prime Minister's traditional residence -- nearby at Number 10 Downing Street -- only as an office.

Later int he day he walked to the Labour Party Headquarters where celebrations for election workers were being held. Mr. Wilson thanked them for their efforts. His speech was cut short when there was a bomb scare in the building. The bomb threat later turned out to be a hoax.

Later he and Mrs. Wilson went to Number 10 Downing Street.

By Friday night (11 October) the votes had been counted in all constituencies. The Labour party will hold 319 seats in the new Parliament ... an increase of 20 with a loss in only one constituency over the previous Parliament.

The apposition Conservative Party held 276 seats -- two gains, 22 losses -- while the minority opposition Liberal Party ended up With 13 seats.

The other parties -- including the nationalist parties of Scotland and Wales -- gained 27 seats.

Labour received 39.3% of the vote, the Conservatives 35.7% and the Liberals 18.3%2
Almost 73.0% of the electorate cast their vote. At last February's election (which returned Mr. Wilson with no overall majority) the turn-out was just under 79%
