  • Description

As the fighting between the three rival liberation groups in Angola intensifies women are being mobilised to assist the men in the country' civil war.

The Union for the Total independence of Angola, (UNITA), which controls some of the most densely populated areas in the country, including the agricultural provinces of Huambo and Bie, have begun to organise women in the form of behind-the-line-assistance.

The women have their own training camp near Nova Lisboa and each month nearly 500 of them go through a basic training course. The course is designed to prepare them for the eventual aim of forming rear lines for the fight against Angola's other liberation organisations which are currently locked in a desperate power struggle to control the country after independence, scheduled for the II November this year.

The women are toughened up by battle-hardened instructors, who teach them the rudiments of military fighting.

The commander of the training camp told a reporter, "This is what Women's Liberation is all about".
