    THE SECOND LARGEST SECT OF TIBETAN BUDDHISTS, THE RED SECT, HAS MADE A NEW FOOTHOLD AT RUNGTEK IN SIKKIM.THEIR LEADER IS GAWA KARMAPA LAMA.HE IS THE 16TH LAMA OF THE SECT AND RANKS NEXT TO THE DALAI LAMA, THE LEADER OF THE YELLOW SECT.

    IN 1959, 200 OF THE 700 MONKS AT THE MOTHER MONASTERY OF TSURPHU LEFT WITH THEIR LEADER AND AFTER A LONG MARCH MADE THEIR WAY TO BHUTAN BEFORE SETTLING AT RANGTEK.

    THE MONASTERY THERE IS 700-YEARS-OLD, THE OLDEST IN SIKKIM.TODAY GAWA AND HIS DISCIPLES ARE REPRODUCING FROM MEMORY THE RARE MANUSCRIPTS LEFT BEHIND AT TSURPHU, WHILE AT A SCHOOL, 16 BOYS ARE BEING BROUGHT UP IN THE SECT'S RELIGION.THERE IS ALSO A WORKSHOP WITH A FORGE WHERE MATERIALS ARE BEING WROUGHT TO DECORATE A NEW MONASTERY BEING BUILT FOR THE SECT WITH THE HELP OF THE SIKKIM AND INDIAN GOVERNMENTS.
