  • Description

President Gamal Abdel Nasser, in a move seemingly aimed at Arab extremists who have criticised Egyptian acceptance of the United States Peace Plan for the Middle East, said there would always be opportunists not interested in the Arab's general well-being, but he was sure the Arab people as a whole understood Egypt's motives. The President was speaking in Open Forum on Friday (July 24) evening at the National Congress of the Arab Socialist Union.

Answering written questions submitted from the floor of the conference, President Nasser once more expressed his view that there was nothing new in the American initiative since the proposals were identical with provisions of the 1967 Security Council Resolution which Egypt already accepted.

The American peace proposals call for a minimum three-months cease-fire leading to indirect talks between Israel, Jordan and Egypt.

Israel has rejected a limited ceasefire, and has not yet replied to the United States. But, said President Nasser, as a "last opportunity" Egypt would react positively to help clarify the aims of the American move.

The President added that his acceptance of the U.S. peace proposals was not qualified and not conditional. However, the Egyptian leader expressed doubts that the American plan would lead anywhere due to the attitude of Israel, which had been placed in a difficult position by Egyptian acceptance.

He said that statements that Israel--which has rejected a limited ceasefire--wanted a lasting ceasefire were dreams which would never come true while Arab territories were occupied.
