  • Description

EUROPE'S FIRST NUCLEAR-POWERED CARGO SHIP WILL BE LAUNCHED ON SATURDAY AT KIEL WHERE IT HAS BEEN BUILT BY TWO WEST GERMAN FIRMS.

THE KEEL OF THE 15,000-TON VESSEL WAS LAID DOWN AT THE STATE-OWNED HOWALDT SHIPYARDS LAST SEPTEMBER. IT IS BEING BUILT FOR THE GERMAN SOCIETY FOR APPLICATION OF NUCLEAR ENERGY IN SHIP CONSTRUCTION AND SHIPPING, HAMBURG. A SPOKESMAN OF THE SOCIETY SAID THE SHIP IS TO BE COMPLETED AT THE END OF 1966 AND IS TO START TRIAL VOYAGES EARLY IN 1967.

THE TOTAL COST OF THE SHIP WILL BE ABOUT 52,000,000 DEUTSCHE MARKS (ABOUT GBP4,600,000) OF WHICH THE REACTOR WILL COST 30,000,000 DEUTSCHE MARKS (ABOUT GBP2,500,000), THE FUEL: GBP400,000 AND THE SHIP ITSELF ABOUT GBP1,700,000.

ABOUT HALF THE COST OF THE NUCLEAR-REACTOR WILL BE PAID FOR BY EURATOM, THE COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES ATOMIC ENERGY COMMUNITY FORMED BY WEST GERMANY, FRANCE, ITALY, BELGIUM, THE NETHERLANDS AND LUXEMBOURG.

ONLY TWO NUCLEAR-PROPELLED NON-MILITARY VESSELS HAVE BEEN BUILT SO FAR: THE AMERICAN CARGO AND RESEARCH SHIP "SAVANNAH" AND THE SOVIET ICE-BREAKER "LENIN".

OTHER COUNTRIES CONSIDERING SUCH PROJECTS, INCLUDE FRANCE, ITALY, SWEDEN AND THE NETHERLANDS.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE GAINED FROM THE "SAVANNAH" WILL BE USED IN THE WEST GERMAN SHIP, WHICH WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH AN IMPROVED NUCLEAR-REACTOR COOLED BY WATER CIRCULATED BY HIGH PRESSURE PUMPS. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST REACTOR COOLED BY A HIGH PRESSURE WATER SYSTEM.

THE SHIP WILL HAVE A SPEED OF 16 KNOTS. IT WILL BE 172 METRES LONG (187 YARDS) AND 23.4 METRES WIDE (26 YARDS). IT IS DESIGNED TO CARRY IRON ORE AS WELL AS TO SERVE FURTHER NUCLEAR RESEARCH PURPOSES.

IT WILL BE MANNED BY A CREW OF 60 SAILORS AND 53 SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS AND RESEARCHERS.
