  • Description

A table tennis team from The People's Republic of China left Nairobi on Thursday (12 October), after playing a series of exhibition matches against Kenyan players. The Chinese team is currently on an African goodwill tour. From Nairobi they travelled to Addia for a four-day visit in Ethiopia, and they will then go on to Tanzania and Uganda.

The Chinese team is the some one which placed third in the recent Asian Championships in Peking behind Japan and Korea. But most of the players are young and are being groomed for the world championships. Against the Kenyan players last week, the Chinese team looked very strong.

On Wednesday (11 October), the Minister for Social Services, Musinde Muliro, hosted a luncheon for the Chinese team in Nairobi. Mr. Muliro told the Chinese that Kenya was generally good at athletics, but lacked skill in table tennis. The Minister, who has responsibility for sports, suggested that the Chinese might send table tennis coaches to Kenya.

SYNOPSIS: In Cairobi on Wednesday, officials gathered for a luncheon honouring the visiting table tennis team from The People's Republic of China.

Hosting the reception was the Kenyan Minister for Social Services, Musinde Muliro. During their stay, the Chinese team had played several exhibition matches against Kenyan players. Kenya had selected their best players for the matches, but the Chinese team was too strong. It is the same team that placed third in the recent Asian Championships in Peking. Most of the players are in their early twenties and are being trained for the world championships.

Mr. Muliro, who has responsibility for sports in Kenya, said that kenyan athletes were generally good. But he admitted that the quality of table tennis in Kenya is not what it could be, and suggested that perhaps the Chinese might send some of their coaches. The visit to Kenya was part of the Chinese Team's African goodwill tour. The remainder of the tour will include Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda.
