  • Description

Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro arrived in the North Vietnamese capital, Hanoi, on Wednesday (12 September) - and became the first Head of State to visit the country since the singing of the peace treaty.

Hanoi's official newspaper, Nhan Dan, hailed the visit as "a political event of deep significance ...and highly elating the Vietnamese people." Dr. Castro was described as "a national hero of Cuba...and an outstanding leader of the revolutionary movement in Latin America."
Dr. Castro had been attending the conference of non-aligned nations in Algiers. And on his way to North Vietnam, he stopped briefly in New Delhi, India, on Tuesday night (11 September).

The Cuban Premier was met in New Delhi by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and a crowd of Castro supporters from the Communist Party of India and the ruling Congress Party. While they waited for Dr. Castro's aircraft to land, the demonstrators shouted pro-Castro slogans and waved banners.
