  • Description

A SERIES OF EXPLOSIONS CAUSED BY PLASTIC BOMBS OF A CONSIDERABLE FORCE DAMAGED THE LEGS OF POWER PYLONS OUTSIDE JOHANNESBURG, DEC 21. THIS LATEST ATTACK BRINGS THE NUMBER OF EXPLOSIONS IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN WITWATERSRAND TO TEN SINCE DEC 16. THE SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE HAVE STATED THAT ALL THE BOMB INCIDENTS SO FAR ARE THE WORK OF A SECRET UNDERGROUND GROUP WHICH CALLS ITSELF "SPEAR OF AFRICA".

AS IN MOST OF THE EARLIER CASES THE GANG ATTACKING THE PYLONS WAS CARELESS AND LEFT A NUMBER OF CLUES WHICH WERE SOON FOUND BY DETECTIVES. THE PYLONS - WHICH CARRY 88,000-VOLT CABLES - WERE ATTACKED ON OCT 10, BY HACKSAWS. THE CABLES RUN POWERS TO A DYNAMITE FACTORY.

IN PORT ELIZABETH THERE HAVE BEEN FIVE CASES OF SUSPECTED SABOTAGE RECENTLY, AND AT LEAST ONE CERTAIN CASE IN DURBAN. SEVERAL ARRESTS HAVE BEEN MADE UNDER THE PREVENTIVE DETENTION ACT. THIS ACT WAS PASSED EARLIER IN THE YEAR DURING THE STATE OF EMERGENCY.

FOUR MEN ARE NOW BEING HELD AS A RESULT OF THE EXPLOSION. TWO ARE AFRICANS WITH ONE EUROPEAN AND AN INDIAN.
