  • Description

King Bhumibol Adulyadet called for national unity to overcome problems facing Thailand in his New Year message delivered live to the country on Monday (31 January).

Speaking from Sanam Luang, where he and other members of the Royal family offered alms to thousands of Buddhist monks, the King urged his subjects to sacrifice personal interests for the common good in 1974. "Cur immediate duty" he said "is to face the various crises affecting our country with confidence, stability and a sese of understanding".

Zarlier the King gave Prime Minister Sanya Dharmasakti emergency powers to deal with the country's burgeoning oil crisis. The decree, issued on 28 December, authorised the Prime Minister to take any necessary action to preserve oil supplies.

Mr. Sanya has indicated that his first action would be to limit the operating hours of places of entertainment. This will include cinemas, restaurants, theatres, nightclubs and other service establishments. Violations will bring up to 10 years imprisonment or a 100,000 baht (5,000 US Dollars) fine or both.

The Prime Minister in his new year message also urged Thais to follow the teachings of Buddha by spending money only on the four necessities: food, clothing, shelter and medicine.
