  • Description

Mauritania's hopes for world peace and international co-operation were expressed by President Moktar Ould Daddah on Wednesday (January 5) when he held an audience with the diplomatic corps in Nouakchott.

On behalf of the diplomats, French Ambassador Adrien Dufour said that initial events in 1971 suggested that, for many nations, peace was still a distant ideal.

But the path towards peace and coexistence was still open, added M. Dufour, and the Nouakchott diplomats drew comfort from the example set by Mauritania during the 10 years of the country's independence.

In reply, the President told the diplomats that Mauritania wanted to continue close and peaceful cooperation as the country progressed into its second decade of Independence.

But although he hopped to see this period herald a new era of international peace and justice, the first priority of Third World nations must be to help in the struggle of those peoples who were still oppressed-- especially those in Southern Africa, in the Middle East and in South-east Asia.
