Two policemen were shot dead outside Montevideo hospital yesterday (Thursday) in an apparent Tupamaros guerrilla reprisal for the death of a student in a clash with police the previous night.

Visnews cameraman Alfredo Pucciano filmed the scene of the reprisal shooting and also the burnt-out wreck of a bus set on fire by enraged students. In addition he covered the crowds paying homage at the coffin of the shot student, 19-year-old Julio Cesar Sposito, who was killed in a clash with police outside the city university. A major labour stoppage was also threatened as a result of the shooting.

SYNOPSIS: Trouble in the streets of Montevideo, after a student had been shot in a clash with police outside the city university. In a hit and run raid, students seized this bus and set fire to it. The shooting caused such widespread anger in Uruguay that a major labour dispute threatened to result from it.

On Thursday morning, the day after the shooting, crowds slowly began to gather outside of Montevideo church where the body of the student was laying. Hastily scrawled posters condemned the killing.

Inside the church, friends, family and fellow students paid their last respects to nineteen-year-old Julio Cesar Sposito, the student who died. His body was subsequently carried to the cemetery by a cortege of students from the university. The Uruguayan National Workers Confederation had meantime called a General Strike for Friday in protest over the shooting. Officials said they planed a stoppage of all but essential services such as hospitals, power supplies and drinking water. Uruguay's Tupamaros guerrillas were even quicker in their reaction to the death.

At this Montevideo hospital, two policemen were gunned on thursday in an apparent Tupamaros reprisal shooting. Police said the two officers were shot by two men and a woman wearing hospital tunics. A bullet hole in a map marked the scene of the shooting.
