  • Description

In France, Prime Minister Raymond Barre is to stay on, at least until next month, at the head of the Centre-Right coalition Government. The decision was announced after the first cabinet meeting on Wednesday (22 March), which followed Sunday's general election.

SYNOPSIS: No changes in the existing government are expected until after the new National Assembly is installed, probably on April 3rd. So newsmen, who waited for an announcement outside the Elysee Palace, were left guessing about the composition of the next Government.

According to Reuters News Agency, M. Barre told the President that he was ready at any suitable time to hand in his resignation, if it should be required. President Giscard d'Estaing asked him to remain in office for the time being. According to Reuters, political observers say there is a good chance he will be asked to stay on at the head of the new administration.

Madame Simone Veil, who holds the Health portfolio at present, was another minister tipped as possible premier. But for the moment, M. Barre remains at the helm.
