Background: The contract for the construction of the strategic crude oil pipeline running from Haditha to Rumaila was signed today between the Iraqi national oil company and a consortium of Italian companies.
The contract was signed by Dr. Sadoun Hamadi Minister of Oil and Minerals and Chairman of INOC board of Directors for the Iraqi side and by the authorized representatives of the Italian companies for the Italian side. The approximate cost of this project is 45 million Iraqi dinars and the period of completion of the works is 22 1/2 months.
The contract includes the supply and construction of all the requirements and needs of the project except the main pipes whose supply contract has been awarded to Japanese and French firms at a total cost of ID27 million. Thus the whole project will approximately ID 72 million. The project has been designed to transport crude oil from Kirkuk oil fields to Rumaila in Basrah governorate and there it will be carried in special pipeline of the deep sea terminal upon the completion of this project, the export of Iraqi crude oil extracted from Kirkuk oil fields will have two main directions, the first running from Kirkuk to the mediterranean which will be used under normal conditions and the new strategic pipeline which be used under abnormal conditions.
Yesterday a contract was signed with a group of Japanese companies for the supply of gas and oil pipes for the Strategic pipeline project at a cost of 18 million dollars. A Second contract was also signed with a group of French companies for the supply of gas and oil pipes at a total cost of 9 million dollars.
Dr. Sadoon Hammadi the Minister of oil and Minerals signed on behalf of Iraq. The signing ceremony was attended by a number of Iraqi oil experts and high officials
