  • Description

President Anwar Sadat of Egypt attended prayers marking the Id Al-Fitr -- celebrating the end of the Moslem fasting month of Ramadan -- at the main mosque at the town of Suez on Wednesday (16 October).

Hundreds of people in Suez -- at the southern end of the Suez Canal -- lined the streets to welcome their President.

President Sadat was accompanied by many senior government officials, including the Prime Minister, Said Abdel-Aziz Hegazy.

A year ago the Israeli army was penetrating deep into the western bank of the Suez Canal. It later encircled Suez during the last stages of the October War.

SYNOPSIS: Consequently, last year's Fitr celebrations were cancelled. This year, however, Egypt joins the rest of the Moslem world in celebrating the festival. It is an important time in the Islamic calendar with all government offices closing down until the weekend. Arab and other Moslem Heads of State traditionally exchange cables of good wishes.

During the lunar month of Ramadan, Moslems abstain from food and drink between dawn and dusk. Now the fasting is over. And the celebrations and feasting -- lasting three days -- started on Wednesday.
