    THE AUSTRALIAN DEPUTY LABOUR LEADER, MR. LANCE BARNARD, BOARDED THE AUSTRALIAN GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYER, BRISBANE ON SATURDAY AND SAW HER IN ACTION OFF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE COAST. SHE WAS SUPPORTING AMERICAN MARINES IN A BATTLE WITH NORTH VIETNAMESE REGULARS NEAR THE DEMILITARISED ZONE.

    MR. BARNARD BOARDED THE DESTROYER THREE MILES OUT FROM THE COASTAL TOWN OF PHAN THIET, JUST AS THE SECOND ROUND OF SHELLING OF THE MORNING BEGAN.

    THE BRISBANE HAS BEEN ON ACTIVE DUTY OFF SOUTH VIETNAM SINCE APRIL. SHE CRUISES IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA FROM THE DEMILITARISED ZONE IN THE NORTH TO THE DELTA IN THE SOUTH.

    BRISBANE IS ON CALL 24 HOURS A DAY TO SUPPORT ALLIED TROOPS IN THE FIELD OR TO ATTACK ENEMY POSITIONS AND SUPPLY ROUTES.

    SHE CAN BE READY TO FIRE WITHIN 15 SECONDS OF RECEIVING AN ORDER FROM A CENTRAL ARTILLERY COMMAND POST ON SHORE.

    IN THREE HOURS SHE FIRED 600 SHELLS - MORE THAN THREE A MINUTE. THE AMERICAN MARINES IN THE FILED HAD RADIOED TO THE BRISBANE THAT HER ACCURACY HAD GOT THEM OUT OF TROUBLE.
