  • Description

A GROUP OF WEST GERMANS WERE ENTOMBED IN DORTMUND TODAY (MONDAY) TO SEE WHAT A WEEK IS LIKE AS A GUINEA PIG IN AN ATOMIC BOMB SHELTER.

THERE ARE 144 OF THEM TRYING IT -- 48 GIRLS FROM 16 TO 21 AND 96 MEN AND WOMEN BETWEEN 50 AND 60.

MOTHERS WITH YOUNG CHILDREN WERE TO HAVE TRIED THE NUCLEAR WAR SURVIVAL TEST TOO. BUT THIS WAS FORBIDDEN BY THE HEALTH MINISTRY WHO SAID IT MIGHT HAVE AFFECTED THE CHILDREN MENTALLY.

THE SHELTER, BUILT FOR PROTECTION DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR, HAS BEEN BROUGHT UP TO DATE AND MADE RADIATION PROOF.

APART FROM DOCTORS AND PSYCHOLOGISTS WATCHING OVER THEM, THEY'LL BE ALONE WITH THEIR ATOMIC-AGE TINNED OR TUBBED RATIONS -- GOULASH, BEANS, BACON AND PEAS, BREAD, SAUSAGE AND MARMALADE.

THE TEST IS THE BIGGEST OF ITS KIND IN WEST GERMANY. THE "SURVIVORS" WHEN THEY COME OUT WILL EACH BE PAID 300 MARKS. (GBP27).
