Background: Lebanese Prime Minister, Rashid Karami, former Prime Minister Saeb Salam and speaker in the Lebanese parliament, Kamel Assad, arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on Saturday (20 March) to try to find a solution to their country's problems.

In past months Syrian leaders have been acting as mediators between warring factions in Lebanon to try to end the civil war that has been raging there for nearly a year.

Mr. Karami and his party were just about to fly out of Beirut for Syria on Friday, when their plane came under fire from rocket attack and burst into flames. All aboard escaped injury.

Official sources said that the incident was believed to be part of an attempt to hamper efforts to resolve the Lebanese crisis.

Mr. karami and his group were sufficiently recovered on Saturday to fly to Damascus and resume their peace mission.
