EAST BERLIN WITNESSED THE TYPICAL DISPLAY OF MILITARY NIGHT, WHILE STUDENTS WERE OUT IN FORCE AGAIN IN WEST BERLIN. PARIS HAD ITS FIRST MAY DAY PARADE IN 14 YEARS AND IN ROME STUDENTS PRAISED MAO TSE TUNG AND PROTESTED AGAINST THE "FASCIST POLICE."
    THE EAST GERMAN PREMIER, HERR WALTER ULBRICHT, REVIEWED A MILITARY PARADE IN EAST BERLIN'S MARX-ENGELS SQUARE. TANKS AND ARMOURED CARS RUMBLED THROUGH THE STREETS IN AN IMPRESSIVE SHOW THE STRENGTH BUT OBSERVERS THOUGHT THAT THE DISPLAY LAID LESS EMPHASIS ON HEAVY WEAPONS. SOME OF THE LARGEST ROCKETS EXHIBITED IN 1967 WERE APPARENTLY LEFT OUT THIS YEAR.

    IN WEST BERLIN, THE WEST GERMAN FOREIGN MINISTER, HERR WILLY BRANDT, ADDRESSED A 100-THOUSAND STRONG RALLY OUTSIDE THE OLD REICHSTAG BUILDING NEAR THE BERLIN WALL. HE SAID THAT EAST GERMANY'S BANNING OF CERTAIN PEOPLE FROM THE LAND ROUTES TO WET BERLIN WAS A VERY SERIOUS AFFAIR, RECENT EAST GERMAN DECREES HAVE BARRED BONN MINISTERS, TOP GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL SAND MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY FROM ROAD AND RAIL ROUTES TO WEST BERLIN. AFTER THE RALLY, THOUSANDS OF WORKERS AND STUDENTS WITH RED FLAGS HELD A MARCH.

    IN PARIS, TEN PEOPLE WERE SLIGHTLY INJURED IN MINOR SCUFFLES DURING THE CITY'S FIRST MAY DAY PARADE IN 14 YEARS. THEY OCCURRED WHEN MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNISTS LED CONFEDERATION GENERAL DU TRAVAIL FOUGHT PRO-CHINESE COMMUNISTS TRYING TO DISTRIBUTE LEAFLETS. AFTER THE 90 MINUTE PARADE TO THE PLACE DE LA BASTILLE THE CROWD DISPERSED WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.

    IN ROME, ABOUT 5-THOUSAND STUDENTS WAVING RED FLAGS AND SHOUTING "POLICE ARE FASCISTS" MARCHED TO A WORKERS' RALLY. THE STUDENTS WERE PROTESTING AGAINST ALLEGED POLICE BRUTALITY FOLLOWING A POLICE CHARGE OF STUDENT DEMONSTRATORS LAST WEEK IN WHICH 50 WERE HURT. RIOT POLICE BACKED BY FIRE ENGINES AND WATER CANNONS MANNED STRATEGIC POINTS ALONG THE ROUTE. CHANTING "MAO, CASTRO, HO CHI MINH" AND ANTI-GOVERNMENT SLOGANS, THE STUDENTS MARCHED TO SAINT JOHN SQUARE.T HERE COMMUNIST TRADE UNION WORKERS WERE LISTENING TO SPEAKERS CONDEMNING UNITED STATES POLICY IN VIETNAM.
