Background: Bright sunshine favoured Seville's gay and colourful annual fair as festivities were at their height, May 13. Among famous visitors to the celebrations were the Marquess and Marchioness of Villaverde, American ambassador, Mr. Lodge and family and Persian Princess Soraya, in Andalusian riding-kit, merrily drinking wine as she passed in a brightly decorated coach.
An impressive parade and exhibition of horses took place in the fair enclosure in the Park de Maria Luisa - to be illuminated that night by 250,000 lamps and 60,000 lanterns. 412 brilliantly coloured pavilions graced the site of the fair. At one time, Princess Soraya was seen seated behind her brother on horseback as they rode happily through the crowds.
Spanish dancers executed the lively "Sevillanas" in exciting fashion to the clapping of castanets and rhythmic strumming of guitars as thousands of visitors watched, drank Andalusian wines and enjoyed the day of festivity to the full.
