Background: The Haarlem flowergirls are the ambassadresses if the town Haarlem. As a token of welcome they offer a flower to each passer by.
The Tourist Propaganda Office had the brilliant idea to invite delegations from other parts of the country to offer their local specialities to the population, f.i. cheese, cookies, sweets, sausages and cakes.
Which was meant as a publicity stunt for each of the delegations turned out in a fight over each little tidbit. Thousands of people have come to the Marketsquare to get their share and they fought for it. Nothing was left in no time.
The organization certainly had not expected this reaction of the public although it is known that primitive instincts are aroused when something can be had for nothing.
