  • Description

On the second leg of his first official foreign tour, South African Prime Minister John Vorster arrived in Salisbury on Thursday (May 21) for "informal" talks with Rhodesian leaders.

Rhodesian Foreign Minister Jack Howman welcomed Mr. Vorster and his wife at Salisbury airport, and escorted them to the official residence of Rhodesia's Prime Minister, Mr. lan Smith.

After his initial round of talks, the South African leader relaxed during a round of golf with Mr. Howman. Mr. Smith went along as a spectator.

But the sport uppermost in Mr. Vorster's mind was South Africa's off-on cricket tour of England. After the official announcement cancelling the tour, Mr. Vorster told a Salisbury news conference today (Saturday) that sport and the forces of law and order would suffer as a result of the decision.

He accused the British government of succumbing to political blackmail in there request to the British Cricket Council that the tour should be called off.
