Background: The Gia Lam Locomotive Works in Hanoi was the first in North Vietnam to initiate the emulation campaign known as 'Labour on Saturday for Fatherland reunification'.The workers here associate their work with the struggle of their compatriots in South Vietnam.

The technical innovations made in this emulation campaign has resulted in marked increases in labour productivity.

Truong Van Bich, head of a coach workshop and a model worker , put forward a rationalization proposal which raised work efficiency four times.

Another model worker, Nguyen Van Bao, designed and built this boring machine which raised work efficiency 6 times.

In a spirit of self-reliance and building up the country through hard work and thrift, the plant is now capable of manufacturing a brand new railway coaches and tank cars.
