Background: At least four people are reported dead following freak hurricane force winds which swept through northern Ontario yesterday (August 20) battering the mining city of Sudbury and the surrounding area.

Scores were injured and hundreds were left homeless as the storm with winds of up to 90 miles an hour (140 KMs) battered the area uprooting trees, knocking down houses and toppling power lines.

The hurricane-force winds blew over a half-ton tractor trapping a man, and hurled a caravan 70 yards (65 metres).

Sudbury's Mayor, Mr. Joseph Fabbro has declared the city of 90,000 people a disaster area claiming damage estimated at more than six million dollars (about two million sterling).

As the storm struck relief crews were rushed to nearby Copper Cliff to prevent hundreds of miners, thousands of feet underground, from going without air.

In Field, a community of about 600, west of Sudbury, half the houses in the town were blown down and a huge lumber mill, the town's main industry was demolished.

The half-hour storm struck without warning early in the morning. The weather forecast for the area had been for cloudy conditions with a few showers or thunder-showers.
