Background: GALE-FORCE WINDS TODAY (SUNDAY) TORE A SIX-TON CROSS WEATHER VANE FROM THE SPIRE OF THE NEW COVENTRY CATHEDRAL. A FAMILY COMMUNION SERVICE WAS BEING HELD IN THE CATHEDRAL WHEN THE HUGE CROSS PLUMMETTED TO THE GROUND. NO-ONE WAS HURT.

WHEN THE CATHEDRAL WAS BUILT IN 1962, THE SPIRE AND WEATHER VANE WERE HOISTED INTO POSITION BY HELICOPTER.

KNOWN LOCALLY AS THE "FLYING CROSS" THE WEATHER VANE WAS BADLY BUCKLED WHEN IT HIT THE GROUND. THE COPPER SPIRE OF THE CATHEDRAL WAS ALSO DENTED WHEN THE CROSS FELL.

COVENTRY CATHEDRAL WAS CONSECRATED IN 1962 AND REPLACED AN EARLIER BUILDING WHICH WAS DESTROYED BY NAZI BOMBS IN 1940.

DURING ITS BUILDING, THE SPIRE WAS PREFABRICATED AND HOISTED INTO POSITION BY AN RAF HELICOPTER, AS WAS THE WEATHER VANE CROSS. BUT ON THAT OCCASION, TOO, THE WIND INTERVENED. HOISTING THE WEATHER VANE TO BE POSTPONED FOR A DAY -- BECAUSE HIGH WINDS MADE THE OPERATION TOO DANGEROUS.
