  • Description

Yugoslav police interrogated a 22-year old Bulgarian who had hijacked an airline after they had tricked him int surrender. The man had been demanding a safe passage to the West.

SYNOPSIS: The jet of Bulgarian Airlines landed at Belgrade Airport in Yugoslavia after the hijacker had seized control. It was on an internal Bulgarian flight. Passengers said he followed the plane's only hostess to the back of the aircraft and then pulled a gun on her. He told the captain to head for Munich or London. But the aircraft did not have the range and was forced to land in Belgrade.

The hijacker was arrested after he had demanded a car to take him to another aircraft which could fly him to the West. After about two hours of negotiations, he agreed to hand over his gun to the stewardess. It was then that plainclothes police who had boarded the plane moved in to arrest the hijacker. High point of tension came during the flight when a Bulgarian army captain, among the passengers, approached the hijacker and told him to drop the gun. The hijacker then fired a warning shot into the cabin roof and passengers shouted to the officer to stop risking his life and take a seat. But the day's events ended happily for them and they were later allowed to return to Bulgaria on the aircraft.
