  • Description

The Lebanese civil war, which has now lasted 18 months, has divided the country's armed forces - but one section has remained unified.

SYNOPSIS: It's the air force, which has so far mainly stayed out of the biter fighting. Some of the rest of the armed forces joined the breakaway left-wing Lebanese Arab Army and many others joined Christian rightist factions.

The air force is equipped with Hawker Hunter jets which could play a major role as strike aircraft in certain military actions. There's now a possibility that this air power could be used in the civil war. A new organisation has emerged which could play a major part in the conflict. It's called Vanguard and it had its beginnings at the Rayak Air Force Base at Shtoura. It's attracting both Christians and Moslems.

The commander of the base is Colonel Fahim Haj, who is also chairman of the commanding board of Vanguard. He spoke to Ronald Robson of the BBC about Vanguard.
