  • Description

The medieval town of Venzone in north-eastern Italy, badly damaged by a severe earthquake in May this year, has suffered again in recent tremors.

SYNOPSIS: Nearly all of the buildings in the town were damaged during the earthquake earlier in the year, and strong tremors on Wednesday (15 September) reduced most of what had remained standing to rubble. Two days later the ruins of the town were shaken by another eight tremors. Venzone is one of many towns in the Friuli region of Italy severely damaged in the two periods of earthquake activity.

The authorities say that almost 35-thousand people may have to be evacuated from the damaged area, although many have chosen to remain near the remains of their homes.

The Italian government has sent in troops to organise distribution of food to the people who have chosen to say, and is also organising homes for refugees.

The people who have stayed have been forced to live in makeshift tent cities. Mobile homes are being sent to the disaster area, but these will be given to farmers who have to remain to take care of their animals. The government has also announced special taxes on football pools and cars to raise more than 163 billion lire (GBP112 million sterling) for relief work. The once-only car tax, from which small vehicles will be exempt, is to be paid by the end of October. It will range from 15,000 lire (GBP 10 sterling) to 200,000 lire (GBP 133 sterling).
