  • Description

LONDONERS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) GOT THEIR FIRST LOOK AT EDWARD AND URSULA -- THE LATEST ARRIVALS AT THE LONDON ZOO. THE TWO SYRIAN BEAR CUBS FORM AN UNUSUAL LINK BETWEEN THE BRITISH ROYAL FAMILY AND THE SOVIET PREMIER, MR. KHRUSHCHEV. THE CUBS' FATHER, NIKKI, WAS PRESENTED TO PRINCESS ANNE BY MR. KHRUSHCHEV AND MR. BULGANIN DURING THEIR STATE VISIT TO BRITAIN IN 1956. ON BEING INFORMED OF THE CUBS' BIRTH, PRINCESS ANNE CHOSE THEIR NAMES.

LIKE ALL NEW-BORN BEARS, EDWARD AND URSULA WERE TINY, NAKED CREATURES, WEIGHING LESS THAN A POUND EACH, AT THEIR BIRTH ON JANUARY 1ST. AS IN NATURE, THEY WERE LEFT WITH THEIR MOTHER IN A SECLUDED INNER DEN. IN THE PAST TWELVE WEEKS THEY'VE GRADUALLY GAINED WEIGHT, THEIR EYES HAVE OPENED, AND NOW THEY'VE BEGUN TO FIND THEIR FEET. TODAY THEY MADE THEIR PUBLIC DEBUT.

SYRIAN BEARS -- LIGHT BROWN IN COLOUR -- ARE FOUND IN SCATTERED MOUNTAINOUS DISTRICTS FROM ASIA MINOR AND SYRIA TO PERSIA. "WINNIE", PRESENTED TO THE ZOO IN 1949, CAME FROM IRAN. "NIKKI" WAS BORN AT THE MOSCOW ZOO IN FEBRUARY, 1956, AND HAS GROWN FROM A CUDDLESOME CUB TO A SPLENDID 500 LB. BEAR IN THE LAST 7 YEARS.
