    NORTHERN RHODESIA'S FIRST SELF-GOVERNING PARLIAMENT WAS OPENED IN LUSAKA TODAY (WEDNESDAY). THE FORMAL OPENING CAME WITH THE TRADITIONAL "SPEECH FROM THE THRONE", IN WHICH GOVERNOR SIR EVELYN HONE CONFIRMED THAT THE BRITISH PROTECTORATE HAD ASKED FOR INDEPENDENCE.

    PARLIAMENT MET FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) FOR THE SWEARING-IN OF ITS 75 MEMBERS, ELECTED IN JANUARY UNDER THE NEW SELF-RULE CONSTITUTION. OUTSIDE THE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY TUMULTUOUS SCENES GREETED PRIME MINISTER KENNETH KAUNDA AS HE LEFT FOR A RECEPTION AT GOVERNMENT HOUSE.

    HAVING ACHIEVED INTERNAL SELF-GOVERNMENT, HIS MAIN TASK NOW IS TO OBTAIN FULL INDEPENDENCE - EXPECTED LATER THIS YEAR. AFTER INDEPENDENCE, HE HAS SAID, HE WOULD CHANGE THE NAME OF HIS COUNTRY TO ZAMBIA.
