  • Description

The Queen Mother continued her tour of West Kenya Feb 14 with a visit to Eldoret - capital of the Western Highlands and centre of an Afrikaner settlement - where she looked round a modern farm before attending the Royal Agricultural Show.

At the farm homestead owned by Mrs. Johanna Kruger, the Queen Mother heard how the family became the first South Africans to settle in the area.

Mrs. Kruger's family trekked from Mombasa in ox wagons fifty years ago. The Queen Mother met Mrs. Kruger's three sons, three daughters and young children.

Afterwards she went to the Royal Agricultural Show at Eldoret accompanied by the Governor of Kenya, Sir Evelyn Baring and Sir Charles Markham, President of the Show. From the royal box she watched the judging and parade of cattle. After the judging, the Queen Mother looked at some of the show exhibits.

The following day Feb 15 the Queen Mother visited Karamin - in the Elgeyo-Marakwet district -- first member of the Royal Family to do so.
