  • Description

MORE THAN 150 MEMBERS OF SPAIN'S ITALIAN NEO-FASCIST PARTY, THE M.S.I. ATTENDED MASS IN A MADRID CHURCH TODAY (TUESDAY) TO MARK THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF DICTATOR BENITO MUSSOLINI. AMONG THOSE PRESENT WAS OTTO SKORZENY WHO RESCUED MUSSOLINI IN THE APENNINE MOUNTAINS IN 1943. SKORZENY NOW LIVES IN MADRID.

AFTER THE MASS, THE CONGREGATION, WHO INCLUDED SOME BLUE SHIRTED FALANGISTS, ASSEMBLED IN THE CHURCH PORCH AND SANG THE FALANGISTS HYMN, "CARA AL SOL", (FACE TO THE SUN), THEIR ARMS LIFTED IN THE FASCIST SALUTE.

IN ITALY, THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE DICTATOR'S DEATH WENT VIRTUALLY UNNOTICED. BY LATE AFTERNOON ONLY 82 PEOPLE HAD SIGNED THE VISITORS' BOOK AT THE MONUMENTAL MARBLE TOMB IN THE SMALL TOWN OF PREDAPPION WHERE MUSSOLINI WAS BORN IN 1883.

ON APRIL 28, 1945, THE BULLETS OF AN ITALIAN PARTISAN FIRING SQUAD ENDED THE LIFE OF MUSSOLINI....THE MAN WHO LED ITALY TO WAR.

MUSSOLINI FIRST CAME TO PROMINENCE IN 1912 DURING A WAVE OF ITALIAN LABOUR TROUBLES. HE WAS GAOLED FOR FIVE MONTHS AS A "TROUBLE MAKER". AFTER HIS RELEASE HE EDITED A SOCIALIST NEWSPAPER AND ADVOCATED ITALY ENTER THE FIRST WORLD WAR. HE ENLISTED IN THE ARMY IN 1915 BUT WAS INVALIDED OUT IN 1917 AFTER BEING WOUNDED.

THE DEFEAT OF ITALY BY AUSTRIA AT CAPORETTO IN 1917 FORCED A CHANGE IN HIS THINKING. HE FORMED THE FASCI DI COMBATTIMENTO, THE FORERUNNER OF THE ITALIAN FASCIST PARTY. WITHIN THREE YEARS IT WAS TO BECOME THE BLACK SHIRTED FASCIST PARTY AND IN 1921 WAS ELECTED TO THE CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES. A YEAR LATER WITH HIS PARTY CLAIMING ONE MILLION FOLLOWERS, HE WENT TO MILAN AND ORDERED THE FASCIST UPRISING. THREE DAYS AFTERWARDS HE WAS PREMIER AND ITALY HAD SET OUT ON THE PATH WHICH WOULD BRING WAR, SHORT LIVED GLORY AND THEN DEFEAT.

AS THE ALLIES MADE THEIR WAY UP THE ITALIAN PENINSULA DURING THE FINAL MONTHS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR, MUSSOLINI FLED NORTH, BUT IT WAS SHORTLIVED FREEDOM. HE WAS CAPTURED BY PARTISANS ON APRIL 28 1945 AND SHOT. HIS BODY WAS HUNG IN THE MAIN SQUARE OF MILAN TO ALLOW THE CITY TO PAY ITS LAST HOMAGE TO THE ITALIAN LEADER....WHICH THEY DID SAVAGELY.
