  • Description

The new United Artists' production of Fiddler On The Roof which had its world premiere in the United States recently, and appears to be continuing the success story of the stage productions which have packed an estimated 35 million patrons into theatres in more than 20 countries, has been given a deliberately simple treatment by Producer-Director Norman Jewison. Filmed on location near Zagreb in Yugoslavia, and at the Pinewood Studios near London, Fiddler On The Roof is based on the writings of the Yiddish author Sholem Aleichem and centres around the life of a family in an East European village ghetto and their flight to the west in the time of the Czars. The leading character, the milkman father of the family is played by Israeli-born actor Chaim Topol.

Producer-Director Norman Jewison, a Canadian television director who later moved to Hollywood and directed such contrasting films as "The Russians Are Coming", "In The East Of the Night", and "The Thomas Crown Affair", has dispensed with many of the intricate and dazzling film techniques used these days in order to complement the story's basis simplicity. Very few zoom, crane, or helicopter shots have been used. The British premiere of "Fiddler On The Roof" will take place early in December.

These scenes from the film were supplied by United Artists.
